Topological optimization in APM products

Topological optimization has become available in the APM software package since the 15th version and its functionality is constantly expanding.Ā The most popular formulation of the problem of finding a structure of maximum rigidity using the ā€œoptimal criterionā€ method was the very first to be implemented.

Since the 16th version, thanks to the introduction of a non-linear optimizer, it has become possible to search for a minimum mass design taking into account allowable stresses, the ability to take into account bulk loads (such as dead weight, acceleration, etc.) and the ability to apply technological restrictions (symmetry, stamping, maximum thickness of part elements).Ā The system now has functionality for post-processing maintenance results.

Since the 17th version, the user has the opportunity to create an optimization problem on his own, setting the objective function and various constraints, which are formed from the following system responses:

  • Node relocation;
  • Mutual displacement of two nodes;
  • Volume / weight of the product;
  • Rigidity;
  • Voltage in the element;
  • Voltage group of elements;
  • Support reaction.

Implemented new technological restrictions:

  • obtaining self-supporting structures, extrusion and some of them have become available for optimization by the optimal criterion method, which can significantly reduce the number of iterations required to find a solution;
  • volume load accounting became available for all types of elements and all responses;
  • post-processing for plates.
